Everything Worthwhile is Done with Other People is an in-conversation event with Amal Khalaf and Rehana Zaman. The event takes its cue from a quote by organiser and prison abolitionist Mariame Kaba, in an interview of the same name in Adi Magazine. This interview will sit alongside the conversation as Amal and Rehana discuss their three-year collaboration with a group of Black and POC women affected by the criminal justice system and their attempts to collectively produce a film that speaks to this process. Reflections, methods and dreams, filtered from their individual and shared work will be offered through the discussion.

Amal Khalaf is a curator and artist and currently Director of Programmes at Cubitt and Projects Curator at the Serpentine Galleries where she has worked on the Edgware Road Project since its inception in 2009. Here and in other contexts she has commissioned and developed residencies, exhibitions, workshops and collaborative research projects at the intersection of arts and social justice. In addition she has developed an arts and migrant justice programme and community development initiatives through Implicated Theatre (2011-2019) using Theatre of the Oppressed methodologies to develop interventions, curricula and performances with ESOL teachers, hotel workers, domestic workers and other migrant justice organisers. She is a founding member of artist collective GCC.

Rehana Zaman is a filmmaker based in London. Her work speaks to the entanglement of personal experience and social life, where intimacy is framed against state coercion and bio politics. Recent and upcoming screenings and exhibitions include the British Art Show 9 (2021), Serpentine, London, UK (2020), Liverpool Biennial 2018, Dhaka Art Summit, Bangladesh; Kochi-Muziris Biennale 2018; Berwick Film and Media Arts Festival; Sheffield Doc/Fest; ICA Miami; Oberhausen Film Festival; Whitechapel, London and Bétonsalon Paris. In 2019 she co-edited Tongues with Taylor Le Melle, published by PSS. She was shortlisted for the Film London Jarman Award in 2019 and her films are distributed by LUX Artist Moving Image.
